We have a lot of lizards in the house, 4 different species by my count. They range from the small gecko to this somewhat large one. Debbie is surprisingly philosophical about them--almost believing my contention that the diminish the insect population
 .
The nicest of the many mosques in town.  There is a large identifiable Muslim population, which seems to coexist quite peaceably with its neighbors.  Our favorite shops are those run by Muslims and Indians.
This spectacular tree is located in a parque in the downtown area. We became acquainted with these trees while in Zanzibar earlier this year.

I'm not quite sure what these trees are called (I think Captain Cook something or other).  But these in the downtown park have a decided list to them.  They also house a large population of oversized fruit bats.
Debbie is hoping to get a haircut tomorrow and I suggested this avante guard salon for her
 .
This was one of the more interesting roadside sales in town.
We never tire of the burdens-on-heads look.

A local cemetary.

In all my years of reading the Garfield comic strip and other cartoons depictions of mice, we always have seen the stereotypical half moon hole at the base of walls and doors--I have never seen one however. Well, in our home here, almost every door has the same half-moon hole gnawed out of it. Last night Debbie was reading the scriptures on the edge of the bed and suddenly let out a blood-curdling scream as a mouse came through the hole in the door and across her path--I was able to resuscitate her eventually.

  1. Toby-You are quite a writer. I enjoy your comments. I am getting a feel for your environment too. It sounds as though you are slowly getting adjusted to your living situation. We are doing fine...winter is around the corner as we had the first snowfall yesterday. Perhaps thinking about snow will help cool you off.ggh

  2. The mosque is beautiful. I am sure that the Elders are so happy to have you and mom there! It snowed here yesterday and the kids built a snowman in the back yard.

  3. Oh my is what I keep saying about your posts. The mosque makes the area look a bit sophisticated. Not so? We also have mice running across the floor so no worries. val
